La Champagne is the province, le Champagne is the wine... but the two are certainly inseparable.
This region around the city of Reims has been home to the vine since the Romans planted grapes here in defiance of imperial edicts forbidding viticulture outside of Italy.
Three primary subregions are the Cote de Blancs, Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne, with grapes being grown in the nearby Cote de Sezanne and the further-south Cote des Bar.
Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are planted, each in regions where it is best adapted to microclimate.
