Autumn Anticipation

I woke up this morning to take my neurotic poodle to the park and experienced something with which I have become unfamiliar – cool, crisp weather. The thermometer registered 58F (that’s 14 to you Celsius-centric folks). Yes, it’s technically still summer. However, after my brisk morning walk, some primitive neurocorner of my brain began firing the ‘it’s autumn!’ signal. I felt compelled to seek out a football game. The far stronger compulsion was for baking. You see, during the hot hot heat, my oven sits vacant, while the outdoor grill handles the bulk of the culinary work. The object of my oven-reacquainting desire was an Alsatian onion tart; something I bake annually.
The traditional pairing with this Alsatian sensation is Riesling; but not just any Riesling. This particular onion tart contains a couple waistline expanders, namely heavy cream and bacon. Thus, our Riesling selection must be of the beefy/brawny variety. The Smaragd Rieslings of Austria’s Wachau are indeed brawny and the perfect match to this rich, tangy and slightly sweet dish.

Three of my favorite, onion tart-friendly Smaragd Rieslings: Donabaum Begterrassen Riesling Smaragd 2003, Gritsch 1000-Eimerberg Riesling Smaragd 2003 and Hogl Loibner Vision Riesling Smaragd 2003.

Oops. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for clear skies and 90 F. What the hell, I’m going to make my tart anyway.
