Balaton

The Balaton wine region, named after the large freshwater lake at its center, is one of seven larger Hungarian wine regions. It comprises six appellations that surround the lake: Badacsony, Balatonboglar, Balaton-felvidek, Balatonfuered-Csopak, Nagy-Somlo and Zala.

Winemaking here dates back to Roman times. In the first century A.D. the Transdanubian region along with Lake Balaton became a province of the Roman Empire called Pannonia. Today 32000 ha are covered with vines.
