Red wine grape from Southern Italy. Dense and concentrated, they can age quite well and when mature will show off subtle fruit flavors and a certain earthiness. The names comes from Ellenico (as it is also known as in other regions), which means Hellenic, and is perhaps a clue to its origins. The crafty Romans used it to produce their favorite wine, Falurnum.
