Probably the most popular white wine grape in the world; there is an ongoing debate about whether it or the Riesling grape makes the best white wines. Chardonnay grapes produce wines that can vary in characteristics, but some common descriptions include buttery, creamy, nutty, smoky, steely, vanilla, lemony, apple, melon & pineapple, depending upon how ?oaked? (how long it aged in oak barrels, and what kind of oak barrels) they are. They can be used to make dry, sparkling or dessert wines. Chardonnay has been present in Austria for over a century; in Styria they call it MORILLON and in the Wachau they used to call it FEINBURGUNDER (a name banned since 1999.) In France it is widely planted in the Burgundy and Chablis regions.
