An Austrian grape that has been losing popularity in the past 15 years. According to legend, it was fished out of the Danube in the 1860s and planted in the Wachau. It is capable of making a dry and elegant wine, as well as great late-harvest sweeties, and is hopefully due for a comeback. Recent research by Franz Regener from the Klosterneuburg viticultural school shows that it is a crossing of Sylvaner and Roter Veltliner. It often produces wines that are soft, full-bodied and have a balanced, nutty aroma.
