Rosa Del Golfo

Rosa del Golfo wines have ancient roots in the agricultural traditions of that distant part of the Puglia region known as the Salento Peninsula. The Salento is hailed as the best rose' producing area of Italy, a theory supported and widespread by Italians themselves. Indeed, Rosa Del Golfo takes its name from the rose' wine that made them famous and still to this day is considered the benchmark of Italian rose wines.

The winery possesses 2 centuries of history, having always been managed by the Calo' family.The hillside vineyards have clay-limestone soils, with characteristic areas of red earth rich in iron, as well as a mild climate which make the area ideal for growing grapes and olives. It is exactly this "Terra Rossa" (red soils) that are the secret to the structure and complexity of the wines coming out of this Southern part of Puglia and which spurred the creation of this particular IGT.

The varietals are all indigenous to the area and are comprised of Negroamaro, Primitivo and Aglianico. It is no secret that the region was known as the "cellar of Europe" for decades, providing blending wines that as a famous Italian journalist described "...cure the anemia of NOrthern vinifications". The winery not only produces their flagship rose', but also a line of mono-varietal red wines that truly express the irony-steely minerality of the terroir, packing it all in with a punch of juicy, ripe and luscious Southern Italian fruit.

The winery is a metamorphosis of old and new, maintaining traditional vineyard practices, all organic/biologic, whilst boasting cutting edge cellar technology to ensure the maximum level of temperature control that allows for intensely perfumed and clean wines that can truly age, including their rose'. It is this maniacal attention to temperature that allows the winery to avoid any forms of enzyme usage or artificial corrections. THe wine is indeed unfiltered but simply cold decanted, to clarify it in the most natural of ways without losing complexity and aromatics. This is essential to produce fresh wines in such a warm climate as that of Puglia.
