Details

Gemischter Satz (literally translating to "Mixed Set") is a field blend characterized by the co-planting of grape varietals side-by-side in the same vineyard. The grapes are harvested together on a single day and fermented together, producing a wine that showcases the best characteristics of each varietal. Originally developed by winemakers to secure standardized yields and quality in the event of difficult vintages, Gemischter Satz has experienced a renaissance in the last two decades — by carefully refining their field blends and applying the finest vinification techniques, wineries like Zahel have brought Gemi- schter Satz back into the spotlight with it’s fresh, terroir-driven style. Since vintage 2013, Vienna received DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) designation for its Gemischter Satz, Austria’s legal recognition of traditional, region-specific wines.
