Details

Gemischter Satz (loosely translating to Mixed Vineyard ) is a field blend characterized by the co-planting of grape varietals side-by-side in the same vineyard. The grapes are harvested together on a single day and fermented together, producing a wine that showcases the best characteristics of each varietal. Originally developed by winemakers to secure standardized yields and quality in the event of difficult vintages, Gemischter Satz has experienced a renaissance in the last two decades by carefully refining their field blends and applying the finest vinification techniques, wineries like Zahel have brought Gemischter Satz back into the spotlight with its fresh, terroir-driven style. Since vintage 2013, Vienna received DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) designation for its Gemischter Satz, Austria’s legal recognition of traditional, region-specific wines.
