Cantine Garrone Prunent Valli Ossolane DOC 2016



Prunent is an ancient clone (parent) of Nebbiolo. The grapes are pressed and fermented on the skins for at least 7 days in stainless steel tanks a maximum temperature of 25 Celcius. Aged in small oak barrels 1 year (50% new, 50% 1-year), then held in bottle 1 year before release.

Piemonte, in English commonly called Piedmont, capital city Turin, is surrounded on three sides by the Alps, hence the name, "at the foot of the mountains..."

This region is home to the most distinguished wines in Italy, grown from the grape variety Nebbiolo. These wines are typically named for the municipalities where they grow, although the demarcated zones include wines grown in neighboring communes as well: Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara, Carema, Ghemme, Langhe, etc. are the names one learns to look for.

Other red varieties of interest are the Barbera and the Dolcetto. The latter of these, as its name suggests, has a winning sweetness to it, while the Barbera does in fact feature a rather barbed element of pointed acidity, though it's not particularly tannic. And then there's Asti--in addition to powerful red wines, this town is home to the generously flavored low-alcohol Moscato d'Asti, and the frequently mass-produced sparkling wine formerly known as Asti Spumante.

White wine grapes include Arneis, Cortese and Malvasia. Piemonte is home to 42 DOCs and 15 DOCGs.


Val d Ossola

The Val d'Ossola is Piedmont's northernmost valley; a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty carved out of the imposing Alps by the Toce River, which with its tributaries creates five lateral valleys all emptying into Lake Maggiore. Because the sandy damp soil of the valley floor is not well suited to agriculture the local population gravitated to the sunny southern slopes of the mountainsides.

The mountainous microclimate, however, mitigated by the nearby lake district, creates an ideal wine growing environment with its day and night temperature variance offering a desirably slow maturation of the grapes and enriching the wine with extraordinary aromas.

The intensive labor required for wine cultivation coupled with the arrival of industrial processing reduced the development of its full potential and has only been carried forward thanks to the local farmers who continue to produce wine for personal use.
