Champagne Chapuy Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut

A sleek and racy Grand Cru Blanc de Blanc by Aurore Chapuy of Champagne Chapuy. Fine and mineral driven with good bite and acidity.

Wine Spectator just reviewed the Chapuy wines, so we might as well share their opinion with you: "Sleek, with racy acidity framing flavors of poached pear, pastry dough, candied lemon zest, white peach and spice. This offers fine, creamy texture and a lingering note of minerality on the finish."

La Champagne is the province, le Champagne is the wine... but the two are certainly inseparable.

This region around the city of Reims has been home to the vine since the Romans planted grapes here in defiance of imperial edicts forbidding viticulture outside of Italy.

Three primary subregions are the Cote de Blancs, Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne, with grapes being grown in the nearby Cote de Sezanne and the further-south Cote des Bar.

Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are planted, each in regions where it is best adapted to microclimate.

Cote des Blancs

In the Champagne region of France, a search for lightness and delicacy will inevitably lead you to the Cote de Blancs.

Located in the department of Marne, this area streches for about 8000 acres or 12 miles with east facing slopes that are almost exclusively planted with the grapes that gave the region its name: Chardonnay.

Of six villages that have been given Grand Cur status, only four are actually located on the Cote des Blancs namely Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger but all municipalities between Cuis and Bergeres-les-Vertus have their vineyards on the Cotes.

The Cote des Blanc's grand cru villages are highly regarded for their quality of fruit and many the best known prestige cuvees of the big Champagne houses source their fruit from here. The complete list of grand cru villages is:

  • Avize
  • Chouilly
  • Cramant
  • Le Mesnil-sur-Oger
  • Oger
  • Oiry
