Negromaro takes its name from two words in Italian, the one meaning “black” and the other being the word for “bitter.” While there is a certain level of truth to this, the name does little justice to the grape’s potential for producing wines that show lovely depth of fruit and texture in the south of Italy—Puglia, especially the wines of Salento, Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto. It’s a healthy and high-yielding vine, one that likes calcerous soils and hot weather, ripening mid September to early October.
