Donabaum Spitzer Point Gruner Veltliner Smaragd 2015
From the Spitzer Point, Donabaum's finest Veltliner vineyard, (about 3 hectares) this is a full-bodied, almost luscious wine, green-gold in color, powerful but not ponderous. The soil is crumbly gneiss, which has fallen down from the two vineyards above it, the Offenberg and the Setzberg. Vines range from 25 - 40 years old. Long aging potential, creamy, lima bean flavors with some exotic mango-like fruit. All stainless steel fermentation , on natural yeasts and then left on the lees for 7 months.
Goes very nicely with shellfish dishes, chicken, pork, asparagus, artichokes & mightier fish dishes. TRY THIS: White pepper creme brulee with fig and prune compote.
From the Wine Advocate, with 92 points: "The 2015 Spitzer Point GrÃ¼ner Veltliner Smaragd is deep and rich on the nose. Full-bodied, rich and piquant on the palate, with stunning vitality, firm tannin grip and the typical power of 2015, this is an opulent and mighty GrÃ¼ner Veltliner with a refreshing and mineral structure. This is surely a long-distance runner, but I'd keep it under the screwcap for a decade."
