Donabaum Spitzer Point Gruner Veltliner Smaragd 2015
A wine made to withstand time. This Grüner Veltliner comes from Johann Donabaum's finest Veltliner vineyard. Crumbled bits of Gneiss fall down into the Spitzer Point vineyard from the Offenberg and Setzberg vineyards which sit above it. Typically Riesling grows high on the hillsides and GV grows lower, the grapes are happier and express themselves better this way. This is a perfect example of this, producing a full-bodied, textured wine, green-gold in color, powerful but not ponderous. The vines range from 25 - 40 years old. Grapes intended for Smaragd level wines are picked later, giving them a richness of fruit, a tad higher alcohol and the structure that lends itself to longevity. Donabaum felt no oak was needed for this bigger style wine, so it is entirely stainless steel fermentation, on natural yeasts and was left on the lees for 7 months.
Textured, creamy, summer favas with a touch of exotic mango.
Perfect with shellfish dishes, chicken, pork, asparagus, artichokes & whole roasted/grilled fish. TRY THIS: We loved white pepper creme brulée with fig and prune compote!
From the Wine Advocate, with 92 points: "The 2015 Spitzer Point Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is deep and rich on the nose. Full-bodied, rich and piquant on the palate, with stunning vitality, firm tannin grip and the typical power of 2015, this is an opulent and mighty Grüner Veltliner with a refreshing and mineral structure. This is surely a long-distance runner, but I'd keep it under the screwcap for a decade."
