Hogl Schon Gruner Veltliner Smaragd 2017
The spectacular Schon vineyard in the Spitzer Graben valley at the northern end of the Wachau valley spans five hundred feet in altitude on 57 ancient stone terraces.
Harvest happens over the course of a few weeks and late in the year, sometimes all the way into December.
Soils here are mainly slate with a bit of gneiss.
The wine presents itself as cool, tight and well balanced with notes of tobacco, mineral dust and herbs, and typcial Gruner Veltliner notes of apple and pear, a hint of mango and spice, powerful but well defined like an athlete.
