Zahel is run by 4th generation winemaker Alex Zahel and is situated on the spectacular vineyard hillsides encircling the city of Vienna. Vienna is the only major city in the world that has vineyards within its city limits and the traditional wine from Vienna is called Gemischter Satz, a white field blend of traditional Austrian varieties. Long ago, this wine was only sold in the Viennese Wine Bistros (Heuriger) which is how Zahel and their small family winery began in 1724. It remained a small family winery until 2003 when Richard Zahel was the first to market Gemischter Satz. The Zahels have vineyards in all of the city's growing district and their Gemischter Satz is offered in 4 different styles allowing them to showcase the unique terroir of each area.
This iteration is harvested from their most urban single vineyards Ried Preussen and Ried Weissleiten which are located on Vienna's most famous winegrowing hill, the Nussberg. The Nussberg sits at 330 meters above sea level comprised of sandstone over limestone bedrock. Only native yeasts are used. Fermentation and aging in stainless steel tank for 8 months on the fine lees without batonnage.
