Zantho Blaufrankisch 2021
$ 12.50
A fresh take on an old indigenous variety. Grown on gravelly dry soils in a warm windy microclimate, it is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel tank to preserve the wine's pure, clean character. Bright and juicy. Notes of cherry and plum and earth, quite refined on finish.
Zantho is a collaboration of famed winemaker Josef Umathum of Weingut Umathum and Wolfgang Peck of Winzerkeller Andau. They work with long standing contracts that showcase the distinct climate of the Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel region of Burgenland. Lake Neusiedl is a large very shallow lake and a UNESCO World Heritage site that straddles Austria and Hungary. The dry warm climate allows for near perfect ripening of Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt and Sankt Laurent. While these are contracted sites, evidence of their commitment to sustainability are many: wind turbine power utilizing the constant winds from the east, electric vehicles and charging stations onsite further promote clean energy. The results of their efforts are wines of extraordinary value and finesse.
