The part of the Loire appellation known as "Middle Loire" is comprised of the Anjou and Saumur sub-appellations.

Within the Anjou wine region are many different appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC), each one responsible for a broad spectrum of wines including reds, whites and rosé as well as sweet wines. The region produces more varied wine styles from different grape varieties than any other Loire Valley wine region.

The two main grape varieties of the Anjou are Chenin blanc, which is here sometimes referred to as Pineau de la Loire and Cabernet Franc. Chenin Blanc is made into dry, sweet and sparkling wine. Cabernet Franc is used mostly for rosé and still red wines.
