Hidden Treasures by Moric
Moric Tokaj and Hidden Treasures G Gorbe Tokaj Furmint 2023
$ 78.50
A new project by Roland Velich of Moric focusing on historic old vineyards in Hungary.
G is one of three single-vineyard Furmints Roland is featuring. Tokaj was the first wine region in the world with an official vineyard classification system a century and a half before Bordeaux, and G refers to the Gorbe vineyard, an Erste Lage (First Vineyard) with documentation dating to 1644. Vines date back to the 1920s, with the most recent plantings from 1970, with soil consisting of volcanic rhyolite tuff and rhyolite.
The 2023 is vibrant and expressive with a burst of tropical citrus fruits, underscored by herbs, a salty-smoky note, orange zest, white flowers, and ripe yellow fruits. This wine demands air and a bit of time in the glass and rewards greatly with increased complexity as it blossoms. A mouthwatering, age-worthy wine, designed for decades, but revealing its unique depth of character after just a few minutes in the glass. For immediate enjoyment, we recommend decanting the wine for 30 minutes.
The grapes underwent whole bunch pressing, native yeast fermentation, and was aged for 6 months on the full lees, followed by 6 months on the fine lees in 500-liter barrels and stainless steel tanks. There was no fining, minimal sulphur additions. It is vegan.
