MORIC Alte Reben Lutzmannsburg 2018

$ 145.00

The Lutzmannsburg bottling always shows a beguiling and feminine side of Blaufrankisch when compared to its sibling the Neckenmart Alte Reben. Though both are elegant and long lived wines, the Lutzmannsberg is Blaufrankisch treated like Grand Cru Burgundy.

Since 2001 Roland Velich has been crafting world class wine from Blaufrankisch. He aptly demonstrates that this indigenous Austrian grape has as much finesse and elegance as Pinot Noir from Burgundy. The 2018 Lutzmannsburg was selected from six parcels with vines age ranging from 85 and 110 years situated on the ancient volcanic plateau from which it takes its name. 20 % whole cluster. Native yeast fermentation occurred in open wooden vats before careful pressing into 500 and 600 liter barrels where the wine was left on full lees for eleven months before another year in 500-litre barrels. It was bottled at the end of September 2019. There was no fining, no filtration and only small additions of sulphur.

Vintage after vintage these are beyond a doubt gorgeous refined wines-- a wine that is first and foremost elegant, well structured and certainly not opulent. Good acidity and pleasant tannins paired with fine minerality, all in perfect balance. A testament to the Moric style and a wine that will have its many fans stock up and put away for the very long haul.
